Gracie is part of the Mission Possible Kids program at church and their “Secret Mission” this month was to raise funds for a organization whose vision is to work towards “the day when everyone in the world can take a safe drink of water”. This week’s installment of ‘Love Your Neighbor as Yourself Monday’ is dedicated to:
Water.org is a nonprofit organization that has transformed hundreds of communities in Africa, South Asia, and Central America by providing access to safe water and sanitation. Their website is full of information about their Mission, Vision and Methodology. It also has some pretty astonishing numbers regarding the world’s water crisis. Here are just a few of the facts they have available:
-884 million people, lack access to safe water supplies, approximately 1 in 8 people
-Less than 1% of the world’s fresh water (or about 0.007% of all water on earth) is readily accessible for direct human use
-At any given time, half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from a water-related disease.
-Every 15 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease.
-Millions of women and children spend several hours a day collecting water from distant, often polluted sources.
Reading that information can make it feel like the problem is too big…how can we even begin to make a difference? Well, we can help one penny at a time. Water.org says on their website that “for only $25, Water.org can bring someone access to clean water for life”.
Gracie’s Mission Possible Group’s task to help water.org was simple… they attached self adhesive labels with information about the world’s water crisis to empty water/milk jugs to use as collection banks. They were encouraged to find a place to display their water jug for the next month to see how much change they could collect as a group. Gracie liked the idea of sending her jug to to her Dad’s work for him to place in his break room. He doesn’t really have a “break room” so it put it on his desk. It’s working. He has been able to give Gracie reports of co-workers that have made donations, but most importantly it is also spreading the word. It’s not every day that some one has an empty milk jug on their desk…it’s bound to raise questions. After the end of the month the Mission Possible Kids will pool their money together and donate it to water.org in support of Haiti.

You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command: "Love your neighbor as yourself.” ~Galatians 5:13-14 NIV
